Social Media Restrictions Enforced in Turkey After Ankara Terror Attack
Following a violent incident at Turkish Aerospace Industries in Ankara, Turkish officials have enacted restrictions on prominent social media platforms, including X (previously Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok. This decision appears to be part of a broader effort to regulate information dissemination in the aftermath of the attack, as reported by NetBlocks, an organization that monitors internet accessibility and digital governance.
In the wake of the assault on TUSAS's headquarters, restrictions were swiftly put in place for platforms like X, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok. NetBlocks indicated that “live metrics show social media platforms... have been restricted in #Turkey” shortly after the incident occurred. This action aligns with a wider broadcast ban aimed at controlling public access to information.
Selim Cirpanoglu, the mayor of Kahramankazan, reported that three individuals lost their lives and five were injured in what has been termed a “terror attack” on TUSAS. Cirpanoglu disclosed these details during an interview with a Turkish TV network.
The attack reportedly involved an explosion followed by gunfire at the TUSAS facility, with HaberTurk television speculating that a suicide bomber might be involved. The incident has caused considerable alarm within Turkey’s aviation sector.
Turkey’s interior minister confirmed the nature of the attack, labeling it a “terrorist act” and stating, “A terrorist act has been carried out against Turkish Aerospace Industries... Unfortunately, there are casualties and wounded,” according to a statement made on X. This confirmation followed local media reports detailing an explosion and gunfire approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the capital.
Reports from the scene indicate that employees at the TUSAS facility were evacuated to secure locations. Emergency services, including security personnel, ambulances, and firefighters, quickly arrived to respond to the crisis.
TUSAS specializes in the design, manufacturing, and assembly of various civilian and military aircraft, as well as unmanned aerial systems and other defense technologies.
